LA-based photographer Jar.photo curates a global photo gallery of his favorite Life and Death party moments

Los Angeles-based photographer Jamie Rosenberg has been capturing fantastical, blissed out musical moments at Life and Death parties across the world since 2018.

Whether he’s slinking through the sweaty crowd at the label’s psychedelic showcases during Amsterdam Dance Event, ducking behind the DJ booth at the imprint’s stage takeover during Los Angeles’ Secret Project Festival, or pulling an all-nighter to nail his idyllic sunrise shot during Miami’s Rakastella Festival, you can always find Jamie with his camera in hand and his grin plastered from ear-to-ear.

We spoke with Jamie about finding inspiration throughout the randomness of life, and asked him to curate a photo gallery of his favorite Life and Death snapshots, to remind us of the sacred magic shared on a dance floor.

How would you describe your artistic style?

The way that I see it, my artistic style is continuously changing. I shoot based on the unique randomness of what’s around me. Intention plays a major role in my thought process as well.  It took me up until this point to realize how important it is to go back to the basics with anything, especially photography.

Where do you draw your creative inspiration from?

I’m inspired by my family, peers, and experiences. Inspiration for me is so random, because I could be eating and looking at my finished plate of food then think what I’m looking at should be a photo. Randomness isn’t as random as you’d think, because if not for these seemingly random experiences, where would these ideas come from?

You’re in the studio working on your next project. What music are you listening to?

During these last months of quarantine I’ve been spending a lot of time listening to a variety of music.  Many of my musician friends are constantly pushing the boundaries of sounds, and I feel special to play a role in the listening processes surrounding their works.

Right now I’m listening to a group called Valley Doll. Other artists and tracks I frequently listen to while working are “Losing You” by Solange, “Too Late for U” and “M1” by Dj Seinfeld, “In McDonalds” by Burial, “Same Day Different Day” by Whitesquare, and “Home” by Romare. There are tons more, but those definitely are part of my work rotation.

If you could pick one dream artist to collaborate with, who would it be and why?

Picking a dream artist to collaborate with is hard for me because I value so many fields of “art”. If I were to choose one off the top of my head, it would be photographer and visionary Gregory Crewdson. I’d love to collaborate with him because he captures raw emotion with a dense understanding through lighting and technique.

Life and Death is turning 10, what would you like to wish us?

Since meeting the Life and Death crew in 2018, I’ve been able to take my photography and inspirations to new heights. Happy 10 years to a crew I consider family, and for giving many creatives a platform to shine and challenge themselves. Lots of love, always.
